Abstract:
Mental disorders are brain disorders. Since many decades the role of the immune system has been discussed to be involved in the pathophysiology of these disorders. However, most attempts failed. Within the last 5 to 10 years, new methodological developments, larger cohorts and collaborative approaches helped to shed more light into the complex interaction between the immune system, the pathophysiology and treatment of mental disorders. This talk will focus on our work regarding the impact of the immune system on schizophrenia with an emphasis of CSF analyses and potential targeted treatment approaches. Moreover, the general concepts of “inflamed brain” to explain those mental disorders will be introduced.
