Archaeological settlement pattern analysis in the Amazon Basin
In partnership with archaeologist Prof. Dr. Klaus Hilbert from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) (Brazil) and her research group at the Universität Augsburg, Prof. Timpf co-led an initiative to develop an Interactive WebGIS for archaeological settlement pattern analysis in the Amazon Basin. The project assembled a database of prehistoric settlement sites in Amazonia, designed a web-GIS interface and visual analytics tools to support archaeologists in exploring spatial and temporal patterns of habitation and human-environment interactions in a region where data is often incomplete or scattered. The project was funded through ProBral, which is a cooperation programme between Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and CAPES (Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education).
The work brings together geoinformatics methods, spatial data modelling and archaeology, offering a platform to handle heterogeneous archaeological data (site locations, typology, environment) and enabling users with limited GIS experience to carry out statistical and exploratory spatial analyses.
