Subsidies are usually assumed to be good for farmers and agriculture but is this issue that straightforward? What is the politics of subsidies? What role does it play and how should it be analyzed in the borderland and disputed territories remain central to this research? This research intends to investigate the untold story of subsidized wheat in the disputed territory of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, since its introduction in the 1970’s. It analyzes the transformations in social, ecological, and agrarian landscapes, and what role the subsidized wheat has played in changing the agrarian landscapes, diet of people and food system in the high mountain region.  My research offers an empirically grounded ethnographic study in Ishkoman Valley. I draw my theoretical inspiration from the field of political ecology and critical agrarian studies while following the transdisciplinary tradition and research network of Environmental Humanities.
