Medical Campus
The Development of a New Medical Campus

Since June 2020, the Medical Campus of the University of Augsburg has been under construction in close proximity to the University Hospital Augsburg in the western part of the city. As the model curriculum for human medicine places great emphasis on integrating theory and practice as well as embedding students in clinical routines from the very beginning, the spatial proximity between the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital is essential.
In the coming decades, the research and teaching buildings of the Faculty of Medicine will form the Medical Campus, covering approximately 37,000 square meters of usable space on a 78,000-square-meter site. The campus buildings are arranged along a promenade running north to south, linking the new structures with existing ones, such as the patient garden and the University Hospital. The diverse spatial design ensures a high quality of stay, making the campus a communicative meeting place: a campus lawn, play and sports equipment, shaded seating areas under trees, and specially designed outdoor furniture – such as the “3 Droplets” (three oversized blood drops) in front of the teaching building – invite people to linger.
In line with sustainability principles, the campus provides extensive bicycle parking with green roofs and charging stations for e-bikes, along with the planting of approximately 300 new trees. The first two new buildings, the teaching building (LGB) and the Institute for Theoretical Medicine (ITM), mark the urban starting point of the campus in the north and create an inviting outdoor space with an entrance plaza and a grove of trees.
Teaching Building and Institute for Theoretical Medicine

The first two buildings of the Faculty of Medicine are the teaching building and the Institute for Theoretical Medicine, forming the initial stage of the medical campus. The teaching building was ceremoniously opened in October 2024, while the Institute for Theoretical Medicine is expected to be completed by 2026. The teaching building spans approximately 6,400 square meters of usable space and houses lecture halls, seminar and practical training rooms, the medical branch of the University Library Augsburg, an interprofessional training center, the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Medicine, and the Institute for Medical Didactics and Educational Research (DeMEdA).
The Institute for Theoretical Medicine will provide about 8,600 square meters of usable space for preclinical teaching departments, as well as laboratories, practical training rooms, and a post-mortem area with anatomical facilities.

The ZeIT Building
The Center for Integrated and Translational Research (ZeIT) aims to establish a unique and innovative research structure within the University Medicine Augsburg. The interdisciplinary and interactive collaboration between basic and clinical research will also be reflected physically in a newly planned building, which will provide research spaces as well as platforms for shared resources and interactions. In so-called core facilities, large-scale equipment will be available for joint use by various research units.
A "Science Hub" will serve as a space for encounters and exchanges. ZeIT's overarching goal is to function as a hub for:
- Developing interdisciplinary research approaches
- Transforming project ideas into concrete funding proposals for third-party grants
- Contributing diverse perspectives to the research projects of other scientists
- Assessing and establishing the feasibility of projects in collaboration with other researchers
- Gaining access to key research resources
Another major objective is to facilitate translational research—transferring scientific findings from clinical practice to laboratory research and vice versa.
The ZeIT building will cover approximately 13,500 square meters of usable space and is expected to be completed by 2030.

Versatile Interim Spaces for Research and Teaching
Until the first new buildings are completed, solid and functional interim solutions will support the launch of research and teaching at the new faculty. The former children's hospital adjacent to the University Hospital has been extensively renovated and adapted to meet new needs. It serves as a place for the first students in the human medicine model program to interact with instructors and patients while learning and practicing medical communication and skills. In addition to seminar and small-group rooms, the facility includes a practical training laboratory, microscopy rooms, and an interprofessional training center equipped with simulation and observation rooms, as well as spaces for learning medical techniques. The building also houses a medical library and provides excellent working conditions for newly appointed professors and the Faculty of Medicine's Dean’s Office.
Furthermore, the Faculty of Medicine has rented research spaces for basic and clinical-theoretical research at four locations in Augsburg and Garching, totaling 6,300 square meters. These include both office and laboratory spaces for biomedical research projects. These rentals are essential for enabling newly appointed professors to conduct their research on-site. For the first time since its founding, University Medicine Augsburg is now competitively positioned in the field of research.
