Profile

With setting up the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Augsburg, the Chair of Anatomy and Cell Biology was awarded for the first time. Since May 1, 2019, Prof. Dr. Marco Koch holds the chair with belongs to the Institute of Theoretical Medicine (ITM). In October 2021 Prof. Dr. Peter Wieghofer joined as a Professor for Cellular Neuroanatomy and  since January 2024 Prof. Dr. Katrin Willig holds the professorship for Cellular and Molecular Imaging in Anatomy.

Research

Our research targets on the structures of the human body, investigating morphological adaptions in different organs, tissues, celltypes and subcellular organelles. In this context, we investigate the structural and functional plasticity induces in the organism by distinct environmental stimuli - in the day-to-day interaction between an individual an its environment. Super-resolution light microscopy is used to shed light on subcellular nanostructures even in living cells and to map their changes over time. Cellular neuroanatomy deals with the complex interactions of different cell types in the central nervous system, focusing on resident tissue macrophages in the brain and the retina, which is part of the nervous system.

Teaching

Dissection and presentation of all regions of the human body and organs, both on a macroscopic and microscopic level are fundamental requirements in medical education. While teaching these elementary basics, we make use of a blended learning concept: traditional in-person learning is combined with modern e-learning units, e.g. in cooperation with the VirtuelleHochschule Bayern (vhb), offering the oppotunity to take advantage of digital learning units in addition to face-to-face learning.
Prof. Dr. Marco Koch
We investigate the impact of distinct environmental factors on physiological an pathophysiological adaptions in the human body.

Prof. Dr. Marco Koch, Head of Chair

Prof. Dr. Katrin Willig
By visualizing the smallest structures and their temporal changes in cells, we can better understand life processes.

Prof. Dr. Katrin Willig - Professorship for Cellular and Molecular Imaging in Anatomy

Prof. Dr. Marco Koch
Students need to dissect physical structures by themselves to understand the structural and functional connections of the human body.

Peter Wieghofer
Our research aims to better understand the role of immune cells in the central nervous system.
