Areas of research

Our scientific activities in this area deal with ethical issues in the context of regional, national or supranational initiatives that collect and manage genomic or other health data (e.g. biobanks or genome programmes such as Genomics England, GenomDE), but also data-driven medicine (genomic medicine, medical AI). Furthermore, we conduct research from an ethical and historical perspective on issues arising in the field of digital health/mHealth development.

Various research projects at the IEHHS address issues at the intersection of public health, population level bioethics and health justice. In this area we conduct research e.g. on Vulnerability and Marginalisation in Health, Pandemic ethics, Migrant and Refugee Health, Theories of Health Justice, Ethics of Health Prevention, Responsibility for Health, History of public health ethics, History of health care worker migration.

Verina Wild is involved in founding and coordinating the international public health ethics working group, which is linked to the AEM and the DGPH.

Our research in this area addresses ethical and historical issues relating to end-of-life care/dying, clinical ethics counselling, gender reassignment surgery (GRS), genetic testing, prenatal diagnostics, transcultural care, professional ethics/professionalism and medical abuse.

We deal with a wide range of topics in the field of medical history, examining the relationship between medicine, health and society throughout historical change from a variety of perspectives. Our main topics include 

  • the contemporary history of medicine after 1945, in particular the history of medical technologies and media, hospital history and the history of medical visions of the future and health utopias, 
  • Nazi medical crimes and their reappraisal, particularly in Augsburg and Swabia, 
  • the history of medicine in Augsburg from the Middle Ages to the present day, 
  • the history of psychiatry and psychotherapy since the 19th century, 
  • the scientific history of medicine since the 19th century.
