Research Associate (m/f/d), Applied Computational Linguistics

Research Associate (m/f/div, TV-L E13 50%)
in the field of Computational Linguistics / Digital Humanities
Expected start date: 2026, March 15
The Applied Computational Linguistics (ACoLi) Lab at the University of Augsburg, Germany, is part of the Hightech Agenda of the Bavarian State Government. Headed by Prof. Dr. Christian Chiarcos, the group addresses broad research topics in semantic technologies, natural language understanding, and knowledge graph technologies, as well as the application of these technologies in digital humanities, linguistics and NLP.
We offer a faculty position (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter TV-L E13, 50%) for an initial period of 3 years to a candidate with keen interest in both linguistic and technological aspects of Computational Linguistics, resp. in both philological and technological aspects of Digital Humanities. The successful candidate will contribute to research and teaching activities within the group and in the wider context of the University of Augsburg. They are encouraged to participate in grant proposals, research collaborations and scientific networks of the group, and to develop their independent academic profile in this process. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to obtain a PhD in computational linguistics. The first year of the contract will be devoted to find a suitable topic taylored to their individual interests and skills.
Your tasks:
- Contribute to the group’s research, network, dissemination and publication activities.
- Co-operate with colleages from the humanities and from computer science in the development of collaborative research and teaching.
- Contribute to the course programme of the group on topics of computational linguistics and/or digital humanities.
- Contribute to the development of interoperable tools and resources for NLP, corpus linguistics and digital humanities.
Your profile / Our requirements:
- Completed Master’s degree in computational linguistics, linguistics, digital humanities, linguistics, data science or a related field
- Demonstrated expertise in both technological (computational) and theoretical (linguistic) aspects of computational linguistics / language technology
- Background in two or more of the following technologies:
- Natural Language Processing
- knowledge graphs, RDF, database or web technologies
- morphological, syntactic or semantic parsing
- digital humanities or corpus linguistics
- Research interest in one or more of the following areas:
- natural language semantics (e.g., WSD, SRL, NER, IE, AMR/UMR)
- Linguistic Linked Open Data or Linguistic Data Science
- computational discourse (e.g., anaphor resolution, discourse parsing)
- NLP for low-resource or historical languages
- Familiarity with machine learning and/or knowledge graph technologies.
- Demonstrated experience in software development and/or programming. Familiarity with state-of-the-art libraries for machine learning and data analytics.
Previous publications at major NLP, Semantic Web or DH conferences will be considered a plus.
Your abilities:
- Good programming skills (e.g., Python, Java) or the commitment to develop them
- Ability for self-initiated working and structured organization of work.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, in particular enjoyment to work in an interdisciplinary team and with international collaborators.
- Ability to present complex scientific and technical matters in English or German. Commitment to develop such skills for both languages.
- Motivation to teach aspects of NLP, computational linguistics or digital humanities, to participate in the supervision of students and in the group’s initiatives for public relations.
- Good communication skills and team spirit.

Contract conditions:
- Availability: as of March 15, 2026
- Limited for an initial period of 3 years
- The position is primarily tailored towards PhD candidates.
- Salary: up to pay group 13 according to the collective agreement for the public service (TV-L E13) or as a civil servant (Akademischer Rat, Bes.Gr. A13), dependent on the assignment of tasks and qualifications, in part-time (50%)
