The project "The Care of Care" was dedicated to the question of the reasons why people decide in favor of or against advance health planning for final stages of life ("treatment in advance planning" or "advanced care planning", ACP). From a gender- and culturally sensitive perspective, we investigated how notions of autonomy, vulnerability, and need for care affect the regulation of future situations and to what extent these notions are shaped by (public) debates on health advance planning. In order to identify the patterns of argumentation in the public debates, mass media coverage in print media and TV, the medical ethics literature, and the advisory literature on advance directives were analyzed. On the other hand, the positions and expectations on ACP in the population, in civil society online forums, and among professional (legal, medical, and social) advisors were explored. The project results show that the topic of ACP is not addressed in a gender- and culturally sensitive way, neither in public debates nor in people's lifeworlds. Patterns of argumentation that emphasize individual autonomy in ACP over care- and responsibility-centered perspectives are also found in both public debates and people's perceptions. Overall, the project thus illustrates that individual conceptions of precaution and ACP behaviors are (also) shaped by public discourses.
