I am a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Ottawa, Canada studying how sexuality is governed in contemporary Iran beyond the familiar narrative of state‐imposed repression. Drawing on Foucault’s governmentality framework, Nikolas Rose’s work, and Professor Reiner Keller’s Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD), I have developed the concept of Projects of Sexuality to map two intersecting regimes—Scientific and Religious. Using a corpus of Iranian guidebooks published from the late 1960s to the present, I trace the practical knowledges these texts promote and examine how they seek to shape sexual subjectivities, legitimate power, and interact with state coercion. My project combines historical depth with fine-grained discourse analysis to offer a nuanced account of the tools, rationalities, and everyday practices through which sexuality is regulated and self-regulated in Iran today.
In short: My research examines the governance of sexuality in contemporary Iran, with a focus on the interplay between scientific and religious discourses using governmentality studies and the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse (SKAD).
