Thesis
On the following pages you will find all information about the processing of bachelor and master theses at the Chair of Management and Organization.
General requirements for all theses
Since the winter semester 2008/09, a mandatory requirement for all written work at the Chair of Management and Organization is proof of participation in an introduction to library use and literature research.
Bachelor theses
Students of the Bachelor of Business Administration - primarily from the cluster "Strategy, Marketing & Management" - and Law and Economics will find information about the Thesis program of the Chair of Management and Organization in this section. The above-mentioned students will write their Bachelor thesis in this program. A deviation from the Thesis program described in the following is only possible in exceptional cases. The aim of this program is to ensure that students are well prepared for the independent writing of an academic dissertation. This program is intended to support each individual in his or her work as well as to give as many interested students as possible the opportunity to write a Bachelor thesis at the Chair of Management and Organization.
Application
Bachelor thesis program
The Thesis program consists of two parts. A preparatory Bachelor seminar and the Bachelor thesis itself. Participation in the bachelor seminar is a mandatory prerequisite for admission to the bachelor thesis; the seminar cannot be used to acquire credit points but is included in the calculation of the workload in the sense of the European higher education reform.
The Thesis program starts at the beginning of each semester. The following diagram illustrates the time schedule; detailed information on the general course of the bachelor’s seminar as well as on the respective current workloads will be provided afterwards:
1: According to the European higher education reform, an average student should spend 360 working hours on a Bachelor thesis (12 CP) graded "Sufficient". This corresponds to 45 working days, of which approx. 15 working days should be spent on the Bachelor seminar.
Selection of topics
Each Bachelor's seminar will focus on two to three core topics. This gives students the opportunity to exchange ideas on their respective subjects and promotes the ability to cooperate. The thematic focus of the Bachelor theses will be determined by the chair and published at the kick-off event. The definition of a research question and development of a disposition to this question is the responsibility of the students and is both content and goal of the Bachelor seminar.
Procedure
General information on the respective course of the Thesis program will be announced in a preliminary meeting. Attendance at this preliminary meeting is a mandatory prerequisite for being eligible to apply for one of the participant places. If you are unable to attend the preliminary meeting, you must wait for the next round of the Thesis program. After the preliminary meeting, students who are seriously interested in successfully completing the program can register via Digicampus. Registration is made for a specific thematic focus within the participant places allocated to this focus area. Please note that, if you are not seriously interested in a successful completion of the program, your registration may prevent a student who is very interested in or dependent on the successful completion of the program from attending. Should you decide to discontinue the Thesis program during the course of the program, you can only re-register for one of the upcoming sessions if fewer interested participants are present at the corresponding preliminary meeting than there are supervising capacities available.
The Bachelor's seminar begins with an introductory course in which successfully registered students are familiarized with the general requirements and necessary techniques for writing a final thesis. This course includes discussion of the progress made by the participants in identifying their individual research questions as well as a discussion of the scope and content of the literature research already carried out and a feedback from the group and the supervisors. The respective supervisors then agree on the further procedure with the students they are supervising, in particular the type, scope and time sequence of the supervision. Generally, a vivid exchange among students is desired within the framework of the seminar. Hence, discussion groups moderated by the supervisor in the respective topic groups provide a suitable instrument of supervision. These groups can be supplemented by individual feedback discussions. The Bachelor's seminar concludes with the presentation and discussion of the dispositions developed by the students.
The Bachelor thesis is generally written as an individual work. After the presentation in the plenum, the official registration of the Bachelor thesis is made, then the actual processing of the Bachelor thesis starts. The processing time is two months from the date of registration.
Formal design of the Bachelor thesis
The formal structure of the bachelor thesis can be found in the guidelines for scientific work at the Chair of Management and Organization. The guide is available in Digicampus and summarizes the formal requirements for written work at the Chair of Management and Organization.
Usually a bachelor thesis is about 30 pages long. The bachelor thesis must be printed and bound in two copies and additionally handed in at the chair as a PDF.
