Short bio

Dr. Lukas Messmann studied Industrial Engineering at the University of Augsburg between 2011 and 2017. Since April 2017, he has been a research & teaching associate at the Chair of Production & Supply Chain Management and the interdisciplinary research group “Resource Lab” at the Center for Climate Resilience. He successfully defended his dissertation with the title “Strategic Design of Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Supply Networks“ (summa cum laude) in June 2022, which was awarded the „Jacqueline Bloemhof PhD Thesis Award on Sustainable Supply Chains“ in 2023.

His research focuses on sustainable and resilient supply chains, combining methods of Industrial Ecology (esp. environmental and social Life Cycle Assessment) with methods from Operations Research (esp. multi-criteria optimization). His fields of research include, among others, sustainable hospitals, agri-food and bioeconomic value chains, and closed-loop supply chains for WEEE.

In academic teaching, he is or was involved in the lectures “Sustainable Operations”, “Industrial Ecology”, “Resource Efficiency & Resilience”, and “Introduction to Business Administration”, as well as the SAP certification course TS410. He is also responsible for the logistics seminars with IBM ILOG CPLEX.

From October to December 2023 and from April to July 2024, he was a guest researcher at the University of Tokyo and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), respectively.

In January 2025, he assumed responsibility for the university’s climate management at the Green Office.
