From Idea to Funding: Interdisciplinary Strategies for Successful Third-Party Funding Applications
Date: 10/07/25 - 10/09/25
Abstract:
In October, the CAAPS workshop ‘From Idea to Funding: Interdisciplinary Strategies for Successful Third-Party Funding Applications’ took place in the Life Sciences. Organised by the working groups of the Chair of Technical Biology (Prof. J. Bahnemann) and Biological Physics (Prof. C. Westerhausen), the workshop focused on two closely related planned third-party funding applications. These two projects are linked by a common data strategy: targeted experimental data collection with the aim of enabling predictive statements about cellular reactions and system properties. The aim of the workshop was to advance the development of the planned third-party funding applications and to further expand the interface between quantitative life sciences, biophysics and medical technology.

Inverse modelling in atmospheric applications
Date: 10/07/24 - 10/08/24
Abstract:
Inverse problems, or the problem of inferring unknown causes from observed effects, represent an important methodology at the intersection of applied mathematics, statistics, and diverse application domains. This workshop focuses on the application within the atmospheric sciences, encompassing both practical challenges and theoretical advancements, with a particular emphasis on data assimilation. Our aim is to bring together researchers from the diverse communities, ranging from theoretical to applied, to foster collaboration and enable fruitful discussions. In addition, our workshop will feature tutorial-style lectures and is therefore of interest for both established and younger researchers.
Dynamics of interfaces: From applied math to physics and material science
Date: 03/04/24 – 03/06/24
Abstract:
Interfaces appear in many physical and biological models, and the description of their dynamic behaviour is an interesting yet highly challenging research field. Models describing such behaviour are either based on an exact description of the interface or a diffuse interface (phase field) approximation. This workshop will bring together researchers working on modelling, numerical simulation, and mathematical analysis.
Interaction of mathematics and materials science
Date: 02/28/24 - 03/01/24
Abstract:
Interdisciplinary research between applied mathematicians and material scientists lays the foundation to leverage the full potential of novel materials. However, the disciplines use different terminology and have limited insight to each other’s daily work. For example, a material scientist may wonder which parameters are needed to model a specific behavior, while a mathematician wonders how certain parameters can be determined experimentally. Therefore, we organize a workshop targeted to doctoral students at the intersection of material modeling and material characterization.
Employing Biophysical Concepts in Biotechnological Production
Date: 09/24/23 - 09/29/23
Abstract:
The workshop focuses on the possibilities of combining microfluidic, biophysical and biotechnological approaches to develop cellular screening platforms for bioactive agents like, e.g., nature-derived compounds, peptides, proteins, nucleic acids, under circumvention of the cell membrane as delivery barrier. The combination of transient cell transfection with the use of the strong dependence of mechanical cell membrane properties on the membrane state as function of the environmental parameters might allow to increase the efficiency of this process, elementary for personalized medicine and small-scale protein production. Combining the expertise of life scientists, physicists and cell biologists will allow for identification of most promissing hybrid approaches.
