Funding and job search

Funding during the doctorate

At least as important as finding a suitable topic and a suitable supervisory relationship is the question of how to finance the doctoral period at the beginning of every doctorate

The most common funding options in the humanities and social sciences are

  • Doctorate with a scholarship
  • Doctorate within the framework of a qualification position as a research assistant (chair, professorship or third-party funded project)
  • Doctorate within the framework of a Research Training Group or Collaborative Research Centre
  • Non-academic part-time

Information on the largest German scholarship organisations can be found here..

You can find job advertisements for graduate positions via academic job portals and subject-specific newsletters (see link list)
