Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is located along the river Isar and has an impressive historic city center.
We will visit the Munich Residence, which was the residence and seat of government of the Bavarian dukes, princes and kings from 1508 to 1918. Originally built in the 14th century as a simple residence for the Bavarian dukes, the Residence developed over the centuries into a magnificent palace reflecting the power and wealth of the Bavarian royal family. The magnificent building still boasts impressive influences from various eras (Renaissance, early 17th century, Rococo, and Classicism).

After the guided tour of the Residence, we will have a typical Bavarian lunch at the famous Hofbräuhaus. Founded in 1589, the Hofbräuhaus is one of the most famous traditional restaurants in the world and a landmark of Bavarian culture.

Events Offered

The Welcome Service offers a broad range of events every semester. This programme contributes to the success of the research stay at the University of Augsburg for researchers from abroad by offering them additional networking opportunities and simplifying networking within the university.
 

Our event formats range from numerous events within Augsburg to excursions in the region.
 

This gives researchers from abroad the opportunity to get to know both the city of Augsburg itself and the Bavarian region better, as well as to socialise with each other and spend an enjoyable day together away from everyday university life.
 

There is a wide range of activities on offer, from city trips and museum visits to boat trips and hikes in the countryside. In addition to the most important sights in Bavaria, such as Neuschwanstein Castle or the state capital of Munich, insider tips such as the medieval town of Landsberg am Lech or the Partnach gorge have also been visited in recent semesters.

Excursion to the Royal Castles

Once upon a time, there was a fairytale castle in the South of the rural region Allgäu, built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as his hideaway. Today, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most popular castles in all of Europe, and it is said to have inspired the castle in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. The 19th century castle is surrounded by the Alps and an idyllic lake scenery, so whether you are a nature enthusiast or like architecture and history – this excursion deep into the Bavarian countryside has got you all covered and is a must-see! Upon arrival in Hohenschwangau, we will first hike uphill to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle. After our guided tour of the castle, we will have a short lunch break before exploring the surrounding and Hohenschwangau Castle.

Augsburg City Tour

Founded shortly before the turn of the millennium around 0 BC, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. Augsburg is not only associated with Jakob Fugger and the Fuggerei, but also with personalities such as Bertold Brecht, Leopold Mozart and Rudolf Diesel. From Roman times to the present day, Augsburg has a lot to offer its visitors - no matter what your interests are! The guided tour takes us through the historic city centre with its magnificent fountains, towers and churches. We will stroll along Maximilianstraße with its splendid buildings and courtyards as well as along the Lech canals where the craftsmen’s houses are located. After the tour, we will have lunch together.

Excursion to Andechs Monastery at Lake Ammer

Andechs Monastery is not only the oldest pilgrimage church in Bavaria, but also boasts its own brewery. The unique landmark towers on the 'Holy Mountain' high above the eastern shore of Lake Ammer and is the perfect destination for a culturally rich and relaxing day trip. During a boat ride across the lake and during the hike to the monastery, we will enjoy the beautiful 'Five-Lake-Region'. It's the perfect opportunity to spend a relaxed day out and about in Upper Bavaria!

Excursion to the Partnach Gorge

The Partnach Gorge is a fascinating location near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The gorge was formed about 240 million years ago and is now about 700 meters long and 80 meters deep. On our hike we will explore the wild waterfalls, rapids and calm waters while safely walking on the footpath along the river. With our guide we will hike up through one of the largest gorges in the Alps and enjoy a stop at a traditional Bavarian restaurant.

Augsburg Riegele Brewery Tour

Riegele is one of the oldest privately owned breweries in Bavaria and has been in family hands for five generations. The brewery was originally established in the year 1386 under the name of “The Golden Horse Brewery“ before changing it to the family name. Today, its premises, including the malting and fermentation areas as well as the lagering cellar, can be visited during a guided tour. The guided tour lasts about an hour and provides insights into the traditional art of brewing. Afterwards there will be a 'Brotzeit', a traditional Bavarian snack of bread and sausages or cheese, at the Riegele restaurant (vegetarian and vegan option available).

Visit of the Textile and Industry Museum (tim) Augsburg

The tim displays the heritage of Augsburg’s textile industry, which was thriving in the 19th century, and is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. It is located in the historic building of a former worsted spinning mill, but does not only focus on the past. It also shows current developments emerging in the textile world with its high-tech section revolving around entirely new areas of application. From intelligent clothing and artificial muscle to carbon products, the tim demonstrates the opportunities of the future of textiles. The guided tour 'From Raw Material to Fashion' will be approx. 90 minutes and will show us the full production cycle, including the machine hall. Afterwards, we well have lunch together.

Welcome Service Summer Celebration

The Welcome Service celebrated its 10th anniversary at the University of Augsburg in the summer semester 2023. As part of the anniversary celebration, all researchers from abroad were warmly welcomed to the University of Augsburg and the engagement of the hosts was honoured. In addition to a festive musical opening by the university orchestra and the official welcome by Prof. Dr. Peter Welzel, former Vice President for, among others, Internationalisation, speeches were given by the Head of the International Office, Dr. Sabine Tamm, and Dr. Jonah Otto, as an example of successful internationalisation at the university. Following the speech of thanks by the Head of Welcome Services, Susanne Graf, the evening was rounded off with music and a successful summer evening made its way, which offered the opportunity for an interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange of experiences and a chance to look back on the achievements of the Welcome Services while enjoying a sumptuous buffet and DJ entertainment.
