University Professor (m/f/d) for European Ethnology, Faculty of Philology and History

The Faculty of Philology and History of the University of Augsburg is seeking to make the following appointment by 1st of october 2027

for Europäische Ethnologie/Volkskunde
(European Ethnology)

The appointment is as a tenured public servant.

With its manifold interdisciplinary connections, the professorship of European Ethnology plays a key role in research and teaching at the Faculty of Philology and History. It is linked with all disciplines at the faculty, above all with those active in art- and culture-history studies (e.g. art history, archaeology and digital humanities).

The incumbent (m/f/d) has a proven track record in European Ethnology and represents the discipline in its entire range in research and teaching. A successful university graduation in European Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology, Empirical Cultural Studies or comparable degree programs and a relevant qualified doctorate and corresponding excellent achievements in research and teaching are required. A research focus in cultural heritage as well as a historical and/or empirical approach to cultural analysis are desired.

The incumbent participates in existing undergraduate and graduate degree programs at the faculty, including teacher training (“Lehrerbildung”), particularly within the scope of Art and Cultural Studies („Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte“). The ability and willingness to teach digitally and in English are required. International visibility, high-ranking publications in the field of European Ethnology and extensive successes in acquiring third-party funding are expected.

The ability and willingness to participate in academic self-administration and digital teaching are required.

In addition to the general requirements under public service law, the prerequisites for employment pursuant to Art. 57 Para. 1 BayHIG are a completed university degree, pedagogical aptitude, and the special aptitude for academic work typically demonstrated by the quality of doctorate, as well as additional academic achievement through a habilitation or equivalent qualification, which may have been achieved outside of the university sector or through a junior professorship. Leadership of a junior research group is considered an equivalent academic achievement under the conditions specified in Art. 98 Para. 10 Sentence 5 BayHIG.

Appointment as a public servant is possible only up to the age of 52. Candidates over the age of 52 can be employed within the framework of an employment contract under private law.
