Students must have health insurance during their studies. A corresponding notification of health insurance must therefore be provided at enrolment. Students are responsible for informing themselves about health insurance. Students at the university are insured for accidents that occur in connection with their studies. The following information outlines where this applies and how you can report an accident.

Health insurance

Students wanting to enrol at the University of Augsburg must register their status as a student with a German statutory health insurance provider. Notification from a statutory health insurance must therefore be provided at enrolment.

In order that the statutory health insurance provider can directly notify the University of Augsburg of your status, they require the University of Augsburg’s special sender number (Absendernummer): H0000935.

This notification is required for enrolment. Without this notification, enrolment cannot take place.

Further information can be found in the FAQs section below.

General information about statutory health insurance in Germany can be found via the following link:

Federal Ministry for Health (in German)

This notification can only be issued by a statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse). It is sent electronically directly (not by e-mail) to the University of Augsburg. This notification is required as evidence that you are covered by health insurance during your studies. The statutory health insurance provider notifies us about whether you are covered by statutory health insurance or not (as, for example, if you are privately insured). From a technical point of view, this notification is covered by the reason for notification 10 (Meldegrund 10).

Please inform the statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) that you would like to enrol at the University of Augsburg. Our special sender number is H0000935. This is the only way that the notification will actually reach us. After the notification is sent, it usually takes a few days for us to receive it.

A physical paper notification is not possible. If the statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) provides you with a paper-based notification, please request a M10 notification.

The notification can only be created and transmitted by a German statutory health insurance provider. If you are already covered by statutory health insurance, please contact your health insurance provider. If you are not (yet) covered by statutory health insurance, please contact a statutory health insurance provider of your choice. You can find the relevant information and contact persons on the internet.

To ensure that the statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) is able to correctly send the notification, please provide them with the University of Augsburg’s special sender number: H0000935.

Even if you are not insured by a (German) statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse), we nevertheless require notification from a German statutory health insurance provider that you have health insurance. Private health insurance companies or overseas insurers cannot provide us with the relevant notification.

Please contact a statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) in Germany and ask them to notify the University of Augsburg accordingly. The statutory health insurance provider will assess your case and, as a general rule, subsequently inform us that you are not insured by a statutory health insurance provider.

A confirmation of health insurance from a private or foreign insurance company is not sufficient.

If there are any changes to your health insurance status during your studies, the health insurance provider will notify us electronically.

I have changed to a new statutory health insurance provider.

If you change to a new (statutory) health insurance provider (Krankenkasse), please inform the new health insurance provider that you are already enrolled at the University of Augsburg. They will then send us a corresponding notification with notification reason 11 (Meldegrund 11). In order for the health insurance provider to be able to send the notification correctly, please provide them with the University of Augsburg’s special sender number: H0000935.

This notification is important because we confirm your enrolment with your health insurance provider. Therefore, please be sure to notify us in a timely manner.

There is one exception to the obligation to provide notification of statutory health insurance.

Enrolment in a doctoral degree programme

Doctoral studies are not covered by student health insurance. In this case, we do not require a health insurance notification. Please clarify with your health insurance provider how you will be insured during your doctoral studies.

Please note: If you change from a doctorate to another degree programme (undergraduate or master’s), we will once again require a notification from a statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse).

When your statutory health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) notifies us that you are insured with statutory health insurance, the University of Augsburg will in return notify the health insurance provider of your enrolment. We will also inform the health insurance provider of your de-registration.

Please note: If you change to a doctorate, we will also notify your health insurance provider. Your student health insurance will then end as doctoral studies are not covered by student health insurance. In this case, please contact your health insurance provider for further information.

Accident insurance

Upon enrolment, students (with the exception of visiting students) are insured under statutory accident insurance during their education and training at the university. The insurance cover extends to all accidents that occur in a causal connection with your studies. Accordingly, students are insured during their participation in lecture courses and seminars. The insurance cover also includes the way to university and the way to and from the place where a university event takes place outside of the university. However, private and teaching-related work at home or outside of timetabled lectures or seminars as well as study-related stays abroad, insofar as these are not compulsorily prescribed by examination regulations, are not covered by accident insurance. Furthermore, internships (Praktika) that are completed in connection with one’s studies are not insured. It is irrelevant whether the internship is prescribed by the examination regulations or is voluntary. The company offering the internship is responsible for providing accident insurance for the student doing the internship.

The provider of statutory accident insurance is the Free State of Bavaria, represented by the Bayerische Landesunfallkasse (Ungererstr. 71, 80805 Munich, Tel: 089 36093-0). The insurer must be notified of an accident without delay so that they can ensure early and effective medical treatment and make the necessary assessments regarding benefits.

The report must be made to the Bayerische Landesunfallkasse within three days of the university learning of the accident. For this reason, all accidents that occur at the university, including those that occur on the way to the university or the way home from the university, must be reported immediately by the person concerned (or by a person they authorise) to the Student Service Centre by email ( unfall@zv.uni-augsburg.de). The insurance provider is only able to provide benefits if the accident has been reported in a timely manner. Exception: Accidents that occur in the context of a sporting event must be reported to the Sports Centre by email at sekretariat@sport.uni-augsburg.de
