It is no longer possible to imagine academic life without women. In order to make their academic excellence more visible, we regularly introduce you here to young female academics from the University of Augsburg and their work. If you are interested in the female researchers who are already working as professors at the University of Augsburg, visit the page FEMALEACADEMIC@UniA.

Prestigious award for machine-human research
Prof. Dr Elisabeth André receives award in Montréal for her research in the field of multimodal interaction
Augsburg – Augsburg-based computer scientist Elisabeth André was awarded the international ICMI Sustained Accomplishment Award at this year's International Conference on Multimodal Interfaces (ICMI) in Montréal, Canada. The prestigious award is presented each year to a senior researcher who has made innovative, long-standing and influential contributions to the field of multimodal interaction, interfaces and systems.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preisträgerin Prof. Dr. Elisabeth André UA-Fotostelle
On the occasion of the award ceremony, Elisabeth André gave a keynote speech titled: "Socially Interactive Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present and Future". In her keynote, she gave an overview of the history of socially interactive virtual agents and robots - a rapidly developing field of research in whose development Elisabeth André played a significant role. Already in the early 90s, she had pushed virtual characters with communicative and social abilities as a new paradigm for human-technology interaction.

Fritz Bauer Study Award for Augsburg doctoral student Juliane Ohlenroth
Juliane Ohlenroth, a graduate of the Faculty of Law at the University of Augsburg and a doctoral student at the Chair of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Contemporary Legal History, has been awarded the Fritz Bauer Prize for Young Lawyers by the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection. In her award-winning dissertation, she analyzes the sentencing practice of the Supreme Court of Justice (OGH), particularly with regard to the crime complexes "Nazi euthanasia," "judicial crimes," "denunciations," and "Reichspogromnacht." It shows that the court, which was staffed with remigrants and non-members of the party, arrived at entirely different interpretations of the law than the courts of instance and, later, the Federal Supreme Court (BGH) arrived at. The OGH, which has been the subject of much contemporary controversy, stands - like Fritz Bauer in his time - for a different, more appropriate way of dealing with Nazi injustice.

Junior Fellowship from the Society for Computer Science for Katharina Weitz
Katharina Weitz and three other young academics have been appointed Junior Fellows 2020 by the Society for Computer Science (GI). With this award, the GI encourages outstanding computer science talents from science and practice to commit themselves to the further development of computer science. To this end, the Junior Fellows receive professional and ideological support from the GI in order to independently implement ideas for shaping computer science in society and academic life.
Katharina Weitz is a research assistant at the University of Augsburg and works at the Chair for Human Centred Multimedia. Here she researches methods to make artificial intelligence explainable and transparent for humans and its effect. In addition to her research, she uses her knowledge to design teaching materials on the subject of artificial intelligence and computer science, for interactive lectures, science slams and workshops in order to reach a broad public, especially children, young people and educational professionals.
