Further training and skills development opportunities for early career researchers at the University of Augsburg are offered by both the Graduate Centre and the faculties. Disciplinary and faculty-specific courses and events can be found on the faculties’ websites. The Graduate Centre offers free workshops with interdisciplinary application in German and English, covering key competencies to support your career development.

Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis: Verantwortliche Entscheidungen im Forschungsalltag treffen

(Target group: doctoral candidates). Online. Language: German

Der Kurs vermittelt den Teilnehmenden forschungsethisches Fachwissen, gibt ihnen Raum zur Reflexion ihrer Werte und Haltungen als Forschende und lässt sie Fertigkeiten im Umgang mit konfliktbehafteten Situationen in ihrer Forschungspraxis einüben. Die Teilnehmenden erwerben Kenntnisse über die Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis und trainieren ihre Kompetenzen zum Treffen verantwortlicher Entscheidungen im Forschungsalltag.

Finanzierung der Promotion

(Target group: master students interested in doing a PhD and doctoral candidates in the early stage of their doctorate). Online. Language: German

Um eine Promotion finanzieren zu können gibt es mehrere Möglichkeiten: Stipendien mit einer Laufzeit von drei Jahren, Projektstellen, externe Finanzierung, Promotionsstellen. Im ersten Teil des Workshops wird ein Überblick über die unterschiedlichen Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten gegeben sowie die Vor- und Nachteile gegenübergestellt. Im zweiten Teil werden die unterschiedlichen Bewerbungsformalien besprochen, gefolgt von einer Übersicht und Vorstellung der Förderlandschaft und der Recherchemöglichkeiten.

Eine realistische Projektplanung und effektives Zeitmanagement sind wichtig für das Dissertationsprojekt. Der interaktive Workshop ist speziell auf die Herausforderungen in der Anfangsphase einer Promotion zugeschnitten. Er vermittelt Promovierenden aller Fächer eine sinnvolle Orientierung über Methoden, Tools und Techniken und gibt viele hilfreiche Tipps für das individuelle Projekt- und Zeitmanagement.

Literatur effizient auswerten

Eine wesentliche Herausforderung für Promovierende besteht darin, die großen Mengen an thematisch relevanter Literatur effizient zu bearbeiten. Schnell verliert man hier den Überblick, was später im Projekt zu großen Zeitverlusten führen kann. Im Rahmen dieses Kurses werden einige Strategien zur Literaturauswahl, -auswertung und -verwaltung vorgestellt. Die Teilnehmenden erhalten die Möglichkeit, das Gelernte unmittelbar mit ihrem Forschungsthema zu verknüpfen.

From Research to Writing: Writing Workshop for Doctoral Researchers

This workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn tools and techniques for more productive and enjoyable academic writing. The workshop is organized around the main stages of the writing process: from the starting point of collecting and organized ideas to the final steps of revising and "letting go". In reflecting their own writing and their approach to writing, particpants will get to know themselves better as academic writers. The workshop is centered around practical exercises and peer exchange, so participants will be able to actively work on their current writing project(s) and reflect on their writing process.

Academic Poster Design: How to create posters that work

Academic posters are a useful communication method to present your PhD project, engage people in fruitful discussions and gain new input for your research. To suit that purpose, a poster needs to be carefully designed, both content and visual appearance.
Starting with the content, we will extract the key messages from your projects - all the way from the research question at hand, to the results, and finally to the discussion and open questions. Keeping the target audience in mind, we will determine what should be on the poster and how we can communicate it efficiently.

Building your Career Strategy for Opportunities beyond Academia

Only 15% of all PhDs under the age of 45 in Germany work at a university. A fraction of them hold a professorship or a permanent position. The majority of PHDs work in in the business or in the public or non-profit sectors. But how do academics actually find a “good fit” outside their familiar academic environment? And how do they make the transition to other sectors? What career models are possible? The workshop will provide an overview of a career strategy including self-reflection, visibility and networking (online & offline), as well as application strategies.

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben mit Leichtigkeit und System 
(Target group: doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers). Online. Language: German.

Gerade beim Übergang vom Forschen zum Schreiben hilft es Promovierenden und Postdocs, sich zu vergegenwärtigen, welche Schreibstrategien sie sich schon angeeignet haben und für welche Teilschritte des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens ihnen noch das richtige Handwerkszeug fehlt. Hier setzt der Workshop an.
Ausgehend von ihrem vorhandenen Wissen erfahren die Teilnehmenden, wie sie ihren Schreibprozess (besser) steuern können. Sie erkunden, was für ein Schreibtyp sie sind, und entwickeln aus den angebotenen Methoden der prozessorientierten Schreibdidaktik individuelle Strategien, um souverän durch die Schreibphase ihrer Forschungsprojekte zu gelangen.

Voice and Body Language: Communicating with Confidence and Accuracy

Communication is far more than rhetoric. Integral to voice and body training is the central idea that physical and vocal dynamics are connected to the speaker’s motivation and to the importance of the information being communicated.This workshop supports the conscious use of voice and body in presentations and addressses PhD students and postdocs who wish to focus on improving overall vocal quality and physical (non-verbal) communication.

Self-leadership under permanent pressure to perform: Stress competence for researchers

(Zielgruppe: Doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers). Online. Language: English.

In the challenging context of daily life in academia, stress competence is essential to keep a healthy balance and to deal successfully with the multitude of roles and demands. This workshop offers participants the opportunity to reflect on the main sources of pressure and strain that they encounter and to identify strategies to deal with them. Participants learn about triggers and consequences of stress and how their personal resilience can be strengthened. We focus on three dimensions of stress competence: instrumental (i.e. time-management), mental (i.e. dealing with perfectionism), and regenerative (i.e. leisure time and breaks). The central goal is that participants get concrete impulses and tools that support them in keeping a good balance between productivity and self-care.

Wissenschaft kommunizieren! Digitale Wisskomm Spring School für Nachwuchskräfte aus Wissenschaft und Kommunikation 
(Target group: advanced doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers). Online. Language: German.
Warum sollten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler den Dialog mit der Öffentlichkeit suchen? Wie kommen Themen aus der Forschung in die Medien? Was macht gute Wissenschaftskommunikation aus? Und welche Plattformen und Kanäle haben Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler, um selbst und unmittelbar mit der Öffentlichkeit zu kommunizieren?
Sie streben eine wissenschaftliche Karriere an und möchten sich zu diesen und weiteren Fragen mit Expertinnen und Experten aus Forschung und Praxis der Wissenschaftskommunikation austauschen? Die digitale Wisskomm School richtet sich vorwiegend an Beginnerinnen und Beginner bietet eine Einführung in die Wissenschaftskommunikation.
Der Kurs vermittelt praktische Beispiele und Übungen sowie theoretische Grundlagen und Konzepte. Neben den Impulsen und Erfahrungen der etablierten Referentinnen und Referenten, die ein breites Spektrum aus Wissenschafts-PR, -Journalismus und überinstitutioneller Kommunikation abdecken, dienen insbesondere auch die Themen und Fragen der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer als Grundlage für gemeinsames Lernen und Arbeiten im Rahmen der Wisskomm School „Wissenschaft kommunizieren!“.

Der Konfliktnavigator– Strukturierungshilfen und Praxistools für das lösungsorientierte Konfliktmanagement

Die Teilnehmenden lernen eine nützliche Struktur sowie ausgewählte praktische Impulse zum lösungsorientierten Umgang mit Konflikten am wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsplatz kennen. Grundlage bildet das von der Referentin entwickelte Konfliktmodell, das vier Lösungsfelder unterscheidet: Selbstregulation, Beziehungsregulation, Sachklärung sowie Prävention. Mit dieser Struktur können die Teilnehmenden dann eine individuelle Strategie für die Lösung oder Klärung von Konflikten am Arbeitsplatz entwickeln.

Das Berufsfeld „Wissenschaftsmanagement“ ist eine attraktive Karriereoption für Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler und gleichzeitig äußerst ausdifferenziert. Aufgabenfelder, Arbeitsbedingungen und Kompetenzanforderungen können sich stark unterscheiden. Der Workshop beleuchtet verschiedene Karrierewege innerhalb des Wissenschaftsmanagements und zeigt Einstiegsmöglichkeiten und Anforderungsprofile auf. Zudem werden Trends im Berufsfeld diskutiert und diese mit Überlegungen zur eigenen Karrierestrategie verknüpft. Input und Austausch wechseln sich dabei ab.

Sie können sich vorstellen, nach der Promotion in der Wissenschaft zu bleiben? Dann denken Sie möglichst frühzeitig in Ihrer Karriereplanung die drittmittelfinanzierte Forschung mit! Die Einwerbung von Drittmitteln stellt einen wichtigen Baustein der wissenschaftlichen Karriere dar und ist mittlerweile in nahezu allen Fachgebieten ein wichtiges Auswahlkriterium in Berufungsverfahren. In zwei Workshops lernen Sie anhand praktischer Übungen, wie Sie geeignete Fördermöglichkeiten finden, Förderbekanntmachungen verstehen und die Antragstellung vorbereiten können.

Panel discussion: „Karrierewege nach der Promotion: Perspektiven aus der Berufspraxis“

Welche Berufsmöglichkeiten außerhalb der Wissenschaft gibt es nach einem Studium und einer Promotion in den Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften?  Welche Kompetenzen und Qualifikationen werden benötigt und wie kann man diese bereits in der Promotionsphase erwerben? Am Montag, den 2. Juni um 17:30 Uhr (Zentrum für Klimaresilienz, Raum 1201) sprechen Dr. Meike Zwingenberger (Geschäftsführerin der Stiftung Bayerisches Amerikahaus gGmbH), Dr. Dirk Blübaum (Leiter der Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern) und Dr. Michael Kerler (stellv. Ressortleiter Politik und Wirtschaft, Augsburger Allgemeine) in einer Podiumsdiskussion über ihre Erfahrungen und Karriereentscheidungen während und nach der Promotion sowie über ihren Arbeitsalltag. Ein anschließendes Get-Together bietet Studierenden und Promovierenden die Möglichkeit, mit den Gästen ins Gespräch zu kommen.

Die Podiumsdiskussion ist eine gemeinsame Veranstaltung vom Zentraler Graduiertenzentrum, der GGS und dem Career Service.

Data on personnel recruitment shows that most jobs in Germany (31%) are filled via personal contacts. In contrast, the popular internet job boards only contribute to 15% of job placements. However, the importance of a professional network is often underestimated by young scientists and networking is perceived as uncomfortable or stressful. This workshop is designed to create awareness for the importance of networking for young scientists, highlights best practices and provides guidance for planning their own networking activities. A particular focus here is on the use of the LinkedIn platform and similar online networks.

Working competently with reviews is a key success factor for publishing in international peer-reviewed journals. In this workshop we will look at some of the key steps to take. We will discuss how to read reviews, how to develop a plan for revision and how to write a response letter. We will also consider how best to reply to difficult questions and critical comments.

We will go through the necessary steps and discuss concrete examples, addressing possible challenges related to funding (e.g. printing cost subsidies), time management, and individual decision-making.

Future Skills - Kompetenzen für die Arbeitswelt von heute und morgen  durch wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit trainieren
(Target group: doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers). Online. Language: German.
Akademikerinnen und Akademiker werden zukünftig nicht nur mit ihren spezifischen Fachskills im Arbeitskontext punkten – die Ansprüche und Erwartungen hinsichtlich weiterer Kompetenzen, zusammengefasst unter ‚Future Skills‘ oder ,Next Skills', werden immer höher. Dabei sind es nicht nur digitale Kompetenzen - sondern vor allem transformative Kompetenzen, welche für Unternehmen und Arbeitgeber in Wissenschaft und öffentlichem Sektor eine immer wichtigere Rolle spielen. Sie sind grundlegend, um gesellschaftliche Veränderungen mutig gestalten zu können: Transformative Kompetenzen ermöglichen Menschen, sich gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen bewusst zu werden, visionäre Lösungen zu entwerfen und den Mut zu haben, Andere von diesen zu überzeugen. Betrachtet man die Kompetenzen genauer, so stellt man fest, dass alle im Kontext von wissenschaftlichen Arbeitsprozessen eingesetzt und somit auch trainiert werden.

Erfolgreich durch das Berufungsverfahren: Online-Berufungstraining für Bewerberinnen und Bewerber auf Professuren
(Target group: applicants to (junior) professorships). Online. Language: German.
Der Online-Workshop bereitet strukturiert auf Bewerbungen um (Junior)-Professuren vor. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer erhalten fundierte Informationen zu den einzelnen Elementen von Berufungsverfahren. Auch ungeschriebene Regeln und mögliche mikropolitische Prozesse werden thematisiert. Die mentale Vorbereitung auf die für viele als sehr aufregend erlebte Bewerbungssituation wird ebenfalls mit in den Blick genommen. Um die Bewerbungssituation trainieren zu können, wird das Gespräch mit der Berufungskommission in Kleingruppen simuliert. Übungsziel ist, schwierige Fragen souverän und elegant beantworten zu können. Hierfür erlernen die Teilnehmerinnen kontextangemessene Argumentations- und Kommunikationstechniken. Darüber hinaus werden die Gestaltung der Bewerbungsunterlagen besprochen und insbesondere die Anforderungen an ein Lehr- und Forschungskonzept erläutert.

The workshop is aimed at all researchers who want to deepen their knowledge of generative AI tools. Participants can establish their own AI workflow for communication and possibly research. We will test and discuss tools, keeping their limitations and ethical constraints in mind. Participants acquire a specific rhetorical perspective on the conscious and reflective use of generative AI that along with extensive testing of the tools offers a detailed overview for the productive use of AI tools in different fields of scientific work.

Von der Selbstregulation zur gelingenden Kommunikation – Strukturierungshilfen und Praxistools für das lösungsorientierte Konfliktmanagement in der Wissenschaft 

(Target group: Postdocs/dissertation supervisors). In-person. Language: German.

Die Fähigkeit zum lösungsorientierten Umgang mit Konflikten ist eine Schlüsselkompetenz in Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft. Konflikte sind alltäglich und Ausdruck unterschiedlicher Persönlichkeiten, Ziele, Rollen, Arbeitsstile und Interessen. Konflikte sind normal und bergen, wenn sie gut bearbeitet werden, ein erhebliches Potenzial zur Weiterentwicklung der eigenen Persönlichkeit. Je früher Spannungen und Irritationen wahrgenommen werden, umso leichter ist es, diese aufzulösen oder zu klären.
Hier setzt der Workshop an. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer lernen Methoden und Tools kennen, die ihnen helfen, bei Spannungen und schwierigen Situationen souverän zu bleiben, Klarheit über die eigenen Bedürfnisse und Ziele zu entwickeln und das eigene Wohlbefinden zu stärken. Grundlage des Workshops ist das von der Referentin entwickelte Modell der vier Lösungsfelder, das eine klare Struktur sowie praktische Tools zum lösungsorientierten Umgang mit Konflikten bereithält. Mit dieser Struktur können die Teilnehmenden dann eine individuelle Strategie für Konflikte und andere anspruchsvolle Führungssituationen entwickeln

Kolloquium: Recherchieren: Strategien, Fachthesauri, Normdateien, Suchfunktionen

Online-Veranstaltung der Universitätsbibliothek

Für die erfolgreiche Suche nach forschungsrelevanten Informationsressourcen ist nicht nur eine adäquate Auswahl an Rechercheinstrumenten entscheidend, wie etwa Bibliotheks- und Verbundkataloge, Metakataloge, bibliografische und Volltextdatenbanken, sondern ebenso sehr die Art und Weise, wie man in diesen Suchsystemen recherchiert. Die Auswahl passender Suchbegriffe und der differenzierte Einsatz von Rechercheoptionen innerhalb eines Suchsystems sind dabei die Grundlage, um eine möglichst hohe Treffer-menge an thematisch passenden Medien zu generieren.
Der Workshop bietet zum einen Unterstützung bei der Auswahl thematisch relevanter Suchbegriffe, indem er aufzeigt, wie man Online-Thesauri findet, in denen jeweils der fachspezifische Wortschatz einer Wissenschaftsdisziplin gesammelt und die hierarchischen und thematischen Beziehungen der einzelnen Fachbegriffe abgebildet sind. In diesem Zusammenhang wird auch die GND (= Gemeinsame Normdatei) vorgestellt, die einen transdisziplinären, normierten und terminologisch kontrollierten Wortschatz bietet, mit dem in allen Bibliothekskatalogen und in vielen bibliografischen Datenbanken im deutschsprachigen Raum nach thematisch relevanten Informationsressourcen gesucht werden kann. Zum anderen werden auch die Funktionsweise und die differenzierten und miteinander kombinierbaren Rechercheoptionen dargestellt, die Bibliothekskataloge, bibliografische und Volltextdatenbanken bieten.
